Abstract.
Stability conditions on triangulated categories were introduced by Tom Bridgeland about 10 years ago. Their definition was motivated by physics, but they recently found some "purely mathematical" applications to areas of algebraic geometry (for example to questions about birational geometry of some moduli spaces of sheaves). The talk will be for the most part a non-technical survey about stability conditions and their applications. Towards the end, time permitting, I will hint at a project (joint with John Calabrese) that also involves root stacks.
