The department of mathematics and computer science at Denison University has just been approved to hire a visiting assistant professor to replace one of our 3-year visiting assistant professors who has just accepted a job offer to go elsewhere. The teaching load is 3-3, with a very competitive salary, great benefits, and a research budget of $3000. We provide lots of mentorship to our VAPs (on both teaching and research), and many go on to tenure track jobs afterwards. We are flexible about what this person would teach, e.g. if they prefer easy preps to make more time for research, or need to be free at some specific time of day for a seminar or research Skype meeting. We are located 25 miles east of Columbus, and there is a thriving network of homotopy theorists in the region, including Crichton Ogle, Roy Joshua, Donald Yau, Niles Johnson, John Harper, Nath Rao, Howard Marcum, and several postdocs and graduate students at the Ohio State University. There is also a thriving research group in Topological Data Analysis, including Matt Kahle, Dan Burghelea, Tamal Dey, Sanjeevi Krishnan, and several postdocs.

Also, I’m happy to teach people how to teach statistics if they are interested (though most start with calculus), as this skill might make improve their chances on the job market when they leave Denison.

The job is currently posted on []. A shortened description follows. By the way, this is a job where the cover letter really matters, as the hiring committee will use it as a filter to see if applicants actually want to be at a liberal arts college.

Here is a description:

Denison University invites applications for a possible three-year visiting position in the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science, to begin in August 2019. We are seeking an energetic and dynamic teacher who can teach a variety of undergraduate Mathematics courses. The course load is six courses per year. The position comes with a competitive salary, a comprehensive benefits package, and annual professional development funds of $3,000 to support research and teaching.

Candidates should speak to their ability to contribute to key components of Denison’s mission – to develop autonomous thinkers, discerning moral agents, and active citizens in a democratic society. Successful candidates are encouraged to maintain a productive, ongoing research program. Our department is currently home to 8.5 mathematicians and 6.5 computer scientists.

Denison University is an increasingly diverse, highly selective, private, residential liberal arts college enrolling approximately 2100 undergraduate students from across the nation and world.
